Deliverables: UX research, User persona, User journey, Figma Prototype
Tools: Figma, Adobe Photoshop, Google Suite

Design Process
The Client

Founded by Thomas Kaiser and Claus Lang, Kodex AI is a startup in Berlin whose mission is to optimize the value of AI systems by helping them make confident decisions in moments of uncertainty.

They offer AI testing services for clients in order to: ensure their AI is resposible and safe, identify and mitigate AI risks, and save time and effort.

Competition

Spark AI is a successful AI company in the US, as their main competitor/reference. Since this business doesn’t really exist in Germany, our stakeholders want to be the first ones to capitalize on this market.

The problem

Recently Kodex AI wants to expand its business target, looking for clients in the manufacturing/ engineering industries which use and/or develop self-automated machinery or cars by offering AI testing service recruiting AI operators

Our role was to create the prototype of the AI operators' interface.

But we decided to go a bit beyond that.

Through research and several talks with our stakeholders, we realized that AI operators would face a lot of stress because of the huge amount of cases you would have to solve, quickly and effectively on a daily basis. It would also be a monotonous job, with no particular tech skills, the only requirement is simply to be able to recognize objects on images.

The challenge:
Design an experience that would help make AI operators jobs more productive and appealing.

User persona
Dirk, the diligent working student

Name: Dirk Stein
Age: 21
Location: Berlin
Tech literacy: Basic

Personality

Bio:
Dirk Stein just started his Bachelor in Psychology and would like to have a part-time job to cover his expenses. While browsing through a blue-collar job website, Stepstone, he finds a job listing as an AI Operator. He feels that he’s qualified and simply says “why not”. Dirk is curious about AI and finds that this job would actually good look on his resume. His quote:

"Ok cool! it’s not like I'm doing any waiter job. This will for sure look good in my CV."
User journey

Scenario
First day working as a AI operator solving Edge Cases for an 8 hour shift.
Expectations
  • This job won't be too bad.
  • I will easily get the bonus
  • I'll learn something new
Pain Points
  • Frustration for not getting the bonus
  • No communication with colleagues or manager
  • Since the work is monotonous, it’s easy to get distracted
Design opportunities
  • A way to keep track of work progress and to see how close you are from your goal
  • Connection with manager or colleagues in case you need help
Solution proposal: gamification

Additionally to our personal attraction toward videogames, the idea to gamify the interface was suggested by interviewees and colleagues. We also did research on how it has been implemented in multiple businesses worldwide.

Style guide

We based on Kodex AI website to do the styling of the interface.

Interface prototype

Design of our interface was inspired by dashboards from streaming channels like Twitch, work-related apps like Salesforce, Workday, Call center dashboards and Video-game screens. It contains a tracking bar, a login and status button and a retractable sidebar for the extra features (Chat, Scoreboard and activity log).

We also designed the general layout of a My Profile page, where  the employer can consult his data, contract, and other HR related information. As well as an AI profile which aims to motivate users by personalizing and winning awards for a personalizable AI Robot avatar.
